Do you check the limits of your thinking?

In everyday situations, there are things that we do regularly the same way, and there are a few things we try to do differently in rare situations. Most of cases we are forced to do things differently only when the situation demands. Unfortunately, our brains are programmed to avoid dangers and trigger fight or flight mode when there is a new challenge in the way we regularly operate.

A simple thought experiment which I call the 3 BOXes Experiment can prove this. If you are presented with 3 boxed

  1. Box one with a book worth $100
  2. Box two with a $100 cash
  3. Box three has a payment request for you to pay $100 for participating in the event

Basically, your final action will depend on your thinking ability to use all the possible tools & techniques to evaluate the situation. There are multiple ways to check your thinking limits regarding this thought experiment. Our thinking changes in every one of the below cases at the end of the article. There can be many other ways too.

But this is an exercise for you to think about the abilities of thinking or limits of thinking about this simple thought experiment.

Suppose you are serious about building your thinking abilities. In that case, I encourage you to sit for a moment and think about all the possible things in terms of possible outcomes, what would you want to pick, and what would do with whatever outcome you choose. If possible write down all the possible steps you take, and all the aspects you think about before you arrive at a decision of which box to choose. Basically how far your thought process goes.

The key to this experiment is to understand the difference in our thought process, which is influenced by many aspects & awareness of things like Age, Gender, Geo-region, Financial status, Religious habits, Family habits, Personality type, thought maturity etc., As per psychology, every decision we make is based on our self-interest, what gives us a feeling of satisfaction which was programmed into our minds since our childhood from all the things which are mentioned above.

Most of the time and many people who attempt this experiment will think only for a maximum of a minute or two and pick one of them or just say they don’t want to participate. However in those fraction of moments what extent you were able to think is an instinctive action. Many time instincts

If you ask a kid to participate in the game the way they make the di

  1. Do you want to participate in the event or not? if yes, what kind of outcome do you wish? – is based on what kind of knowledge and situation you are in. This has 3 possibilities

      2. You might want to donate that money
      3. You might not know the value of the book or you don’t value books
      4. You might even purchase the same book at a discounted rate and save a few dollars.
    2. You wish to pick a book
      1. You might sell the book for a better prize
      2. You might want to gift it to someone special
      3. You know about the value of the book and use it to earn a lifelong wealth
      4. You might want to impress someone that you are fond of reading
      5. You might want to learn what’s in the book and teach it to your kids
  2. What if you get cash of $100 – How would you want to use
  3. What if you get a book? – How would you want to use
  4. What if you get the payment request? – How would you pay $100
  5. What if you were given only the first 2 options – What would you do?
  6. What if you were given only 1 & 3 options? – What would you do?
  7. What if you were given 2 & 3 options? – What would you do?
  8. What if were given a chance to pick 2 turns? – What would you do?
  9. What if were given more than 3 options and only 1 turn to pick? – What would you do?

Not many of us try to see what’s in the box, what want to satisfy ourselves with what

As most of our learning comes from our education, people, things and situations around us.

And the are a few things that we do only when someone asks us. Especially very few students and working professionals fall under the third category. You might be windy there is the fourth category of people who constantly keep pushing themself consciously to do things differently a
